Summerlin is a 22,500‑acre master‑planned, mixed‑use development on the western edge of the Las Vegas Valley. Conceived by Howard Hughes Corporation in the late 1980s and officially launched in 1990, it spans the foothills of the Spring Mountains and sits adjacent to Red Rock National Conservation Area. The community is governed by three associations—Summerlin North, Summerlin South and Summerlin West—which together oversee more than 22 distinct villages and dozens of smaller neighborhoods. Each village has its own architectural themes and amenities, offering everything from age‑restricted enclaves to custom estate homes and urban‑styled condos.
Summerlin places a strong emphasis on outdoor recreation and open space. It boasts nearly 250 parks ranging from small pocket parks to community parks spanning five to 20 acres. Recreational facilities across these parks include 16 tennis courts, 14 baseball/softball fields, 11 basketball courts, seven soccer fields, three sand‑volleyball courts, football fields, interactive splash pads, roller‑skating rinks, community centers and pools. The Summerlin Trail System, consistently ranked as residents’ favorite amenity, consists of more than 150 miles of trails connecting neighborhoods and villages and providing safe passage for children to school. Ten miles of trail run along the 215 Beltway and will eventually link directly to Red Rock Canyon. A separate network of more than 200 miles of trails is planned to weave through the community’s desert preserve areas.
Beyond parks and trails, Summerlin features ten public and private golf courses, including Bear’s Best (a Jack Nicklaus–designed course) and Nevada’s only two Tournament Players Club courses. Residents can access four multi‑purpose community centers—Trails, Vistas, Willows and Gardens—which host youth camps, classes and special events. The community’s own Downtown Summerlin is a 400‑acre urban core with about 1.6 million square feet of retail space and 200,000 square feet of offices, anchored by Red Rock Casino Resort, City National Arena (practice facility for the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights) and the Las Vegas Ballpark. In total, Summerlin is home to more than two dozen public and private schools, 14 houses of worship, three resort hotels, a state‑of‑the‑art medical center and extensive office parks. With its combination of diverse housing, abundant recreational amenities, miles of trails and a vibrant urban center, Summerlin offers a well‑rounded lifestyle in the heart of the desert.
